Problems with wireless internet

Hi all,

Before this year, I'd never used wireless. I bought a router a few months ago and had a friend help me hook it up. I didn't have any trouble with it until last week, when I took my laptop over to a friend's house and hooked into her network. About an hour or so later, my laptop went offline and I couldn't find any networks to connect to. The same friend that helped me set up my router came to my place the next day and said that a switch on my laptop that determined my ability to connect to wireless networks had somehow gotten flipped. The Internet worked fine for about three days after that, and then when I tried to connect this morning, it didn't work. I was able to find my network in the connections menu, but the laptop wouldn't let me connect for some reason. When I tried to troubleshoot, a message popped up that said Windows was unable to fix all the issues, and I still can't connect. I tried refreshing the connection, but that didn't help either. I'm a complete novice at using wireless and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what I can do.

Thanks,
Becky

If the network is coming up on the computer, there is nothing wrong with the laptop itself. It sounds like your router might be having the issue. Make sure that is on first. If it is, I'm not too sure what else to do.

This is hard to solve, because I don't know what you mean by your networks is coming up? Does it show your router is working?
Here is a way to check if you can not see it. Open your browser and type
192.168.0.1 or
192.168.0.200
That might be your routers address. I also unplug and plug mine back up and wait when I lose the signal.

Yea, if it's the router sometimes it takes some digging and investigating to see exactly what the problem is. There are a few possibilities I'm sure, but I'm not exactly a tech person so I don't want to say something and make it worse.

When I say my network comes up, I mean that when I go into the Control Panel and click on "Connect to the Internet" and then on "Wireless", a list of available networks comes up, including the network that my friend set up when he set up my router. I think I'll unplug the router and plug it back in and then try the router addresses. Thanks guys!

If you can see the address on the list you hit inter and if you have a password than you need to type that in. If not it will connect. Did your friend put a password on the router?

Yeah, but when I hit enter on it, it told me that I couldn't connect. But whatever the problem was, unplugging and replugging seems to have done the trick, for now. I really hope it doesn't screw up again. Thanks again for the help!

Well somethimes things get in the way of the signal. Could be something in the place you live, or many other things. Wireless just doesn't work right always. Smile.

usually a reset will fix it. if not a reset and reboot puter, or tell it to release IP and find it again.
